Buckley believes in offering professional development opportunities for its teachers and staff members to learn both from their colleagues as well as from formal programs held outside the School. New Buckley teachers are afforded the opportunity to participate in an extensive orientation process that introduces them to the School, its culture and traditions. In addition to introductory meetings with department heads, administrators and the full staff in the late summer and early fall, faculty members are paired with mentor teachers who support and guide them through their first year at the School.

  • Assistant Director of Lower School

    The Buckley School, an all boys K-9 independent school in New York City, is seeking a full-time Assistant Director of Lower School for the upcoming academic year, beginning July 1, 2024. This role reports directly to the Director of the Lower School and collaborates closely with the administrative team.

    The Assistant Director of Lower School role demands vision, organization, attention to detail, and the ability to navigate both macro and micro aspects of the job. An innovative approach to professional development, exceptional interpersonal skills, and a positive and uplifting attitude are crucial.

    Responsibilities include:
    • Partnering in providing day-to-day support for faculty to craft forward thinking and reflective learning environments
    • Communicating with parents about their children’s needs
    • Overseeing the assistant teacher program, ensuring its alignment with our educational values and goals, fostering growth and development within our teaching staff
    • Maintaining progress and alignment, specifically within literacy (data analysis, monitoring progress, communication and professional development)
    • Administrative duties including scheduling that ensure the smooth functioning of the Lower School

    Requirements:
    • Master’s degree
    • Administrative experience
    • Minimum 5 years of elementary school classroom teaching
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Experience in instructional leadership including evidence-based literacy practices

  • Assistant Teacher, Lower School

    The Buckley School, an all boys K-9 independent school in New York City, is seeking full-time Lower School Assistant Teachers for the upcoming academic year, starting July 1, 2024.

    Assistant Teachers are an integral part of Buckley’s Lower School, working with the Head Teacher in each Kindergarten through 3rd Grade homeroom. Our Assistant Teaching program allows teachers to stay and receive mentorship, coaching and professional development for three years as they build the skills and experience needed for head teaching positions. 

    Responsibilities include:
    • Collaborating with the Head Teacher to plan, prepare and teach homeroom lessons, such as math, language arts, social studies, writing and Social Emotional Learning
    • Actively participating in daily classroom management
    • Communicating regularly with the Head Teacher about the students’ academic progress and their social/emotional growth
    • Planning and teaching small group and whole group lessons
    • Teaching a small reading group
    • Supporting the Head Teacher in preparing written reports for each student and holding parent-teacher conferences twice a year
    • Participating in biweekly divisional faculty meetings
    • Participating in biweekly Assistant Teacher meetings

    Requirements:
    • Bachelor’s Degree (in Education preferred)
    • Master’s Degree in Education in progress or seeking to pursue in the near future
    • Previous experience working with Lower School aged children and/or a desire to learn how to teach in primary grades
    • Have an ability to work collaboratively with mentor teachers and assistant peer group
    • Strong communication skills both in writing and speaking
    • Proficiency in Gmail, Google Docs
    • Organizational skills
