Buckley Varsity Lacrosse vs. Dalton

Will Strumolo
The Buckley Varsity Lacrosse team won its first league game yesterday afternoon, erupting for 13 goals against Dalton. Coming off a frustrating loss to St. David’s, the Blue Demons hoped to get their season back on track against Dalton and hit the field running. Bolstered by the presence of their ninth-grade captains on the sideline, the seventh and eighth grade players put on a dominant display in almost all aspects of the game (face-offs not included).

Stuyvie Coleman once again got Buckley’s scoring started with a tough spin move on the crease, followed by a gritty finish. Buckley had most of the possession early in the game, but Dalton’s defense stood tall. And, with the opposition’s #26 unbeatable on the face-off, Dalton capitalized on several transition opportunities and tied the game at 2-2 in the second quarter. However, after Michael Hennessy powered home his second goal of the season to put the Blue Demons up, the floodgates opened, and Buckley enjoyed a comfortable, goal-happy afternoon.

Austin Sanders and William Wiltshire led all scorers with a hat-trick each. Spencer Graham and Will Truesdell scored as well, and Andrew Witmer kept his perfect shooting record intact with a cheeky shot off a tough face-dodge. Ander Legaspi scored his first goal of the season to cap a hard-working performance at both ends of the field. And seventh-grade attackman Nick Mortimer scored off a feed from classmate Jason Bab to the delight of the sideline. Hennessy and Wiltshire led the team in ground balls with six and four respectively, and Gage Spolansky and Taymor Idliby were close behind with three apiece. Buckley’s defense was solid once again, handling Dalton’s offense and even surviving a two-man deficit behind the efforts of George Coumantaros, Arthur Renehan, Philip Weymouth, and J.D. Wieland.

Colin Bailey had another stellar game in cage making six saves early in the game to keep the score close, and goalie Dayton Hedges played solid fourth quarter minutes in relief. The coaches were pleased with the entire team’s effort and were happy that all 28 players who dressed for the game saw minutes on the field.

The team would once again like to thank Buckley’s track team and all the parents and friends who came out in support. The team has two league games next week: Tuesday against Trinity on Field #70 at 3:15pm, and Thursday against Allen-Stevenson at 4:00pm (field TBA).
