Buckley Varsity Lacrosse vs. Collegiate

Will Strumolo
The Buckley Varsity Lacrosse team finished the league portion of their season in style yesterday afternoon, cruising to a 9-1 victory over Collegiate. Despite the wet conditions, it was a dominant performance by the Blue Demons from start to finish. After Austin Sanders opened the scoring off a feed from Gage Spolansky, the starting attack line of Spolansky, Stuyvie Coleman, and Jamie Bowers took over. Each player on that line scored a goal to give Buckley a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Midfielder William Wiltshire got the scoring started in the second with a beautiful quick-stick goal right on the crease, with the assist going to Bowers. And Spolansky found Sanders again before the half to make the score 6-0. Every player who dressed saw the field in the second half, and there were many notable performances. Seventh-grade attackman Taymor Idliby scored a great goal in the third quarter off a feed from classmate Spencer Graham. Defenders Kieran Bondy, Adam Pell, and Luke Bitler each had a great play (a strip check, a brave hit, and a gritty ground ball respectively), and all the defenders combined well on the day to limit Collegiate to 9 shots and 1 goal.

J.D. Wieland performed well in his first game at long-stick midfield, and Buckley’s 33 ground balls were a season high. Wiltshire, Sanders, Coleman, and Hennessy combined to win 12 of 14 face-offs, and Colin Bailey and Dayton Hedges played flawless games in cage.

With the victory, Buckley finishes 4-1-1 in the league, which should put them second in the final standings. Three non-league games remain, however, as well as the Allen-Stevenson tournament, so there is still plenty of lacrosse to be played! Buckley takes the field again tomorrow (Thursday 5/17) against Tuxedo Park at 3:45pm on Randall’s Island Field #70.
