The Buckley Varsity Lacrosse team finished the regular season yesterday afternoon in dominant fashion, with a comfortable 10-4 win over St. Martin. As it was the final home game for many of the players, Buckley fielded a starting unit of almost all the graduating Class VIII and Class IX boys: Jamie Bowers, Jake Brimberg, Addison Davenport, James Flynn, Will Hay, Austin Sanders, Oliver Senbahar, Gage Spolansky, and Will Truesdell (the team missed their other two graduating teammates, Nick Anderson and Zach Eberhart, who were out sick). It was a special moment for this group of veterans who were the heart and soul of this year’s team and played an enormous role in its many successes.
In stark contrast to the army of Blue Demons, St. Martin was short on numbers, having left several players at home, and it turned out that those missing players were key members of their team. As a result, Buckley enjoyed a comfortable afternoon. The offense was able to fine tune their plays in preparation for next week’s tournament, and the defense was able to work on their communication and man-down movement. More importantly, every player in blue stepped on the field, making the 10-4 victory a real team effort.
Spolansky led all scorers with a hat trick and one assist, while Will Truesdell scored two of his own and dished out a team-high four assists. Davenport had two goals, Sanders and Hay had one each, and Flynn scored his first of the season. Ander Legaspi and Philip Weymouth also got on the score-sheet with an assist each, and Senbahar stood tall in goal all afternoon. The team collected a season-high 41 ground balls, led by Truesdell, Sanders, Flynn and Weymouth with seven, six, five and four respectively. And Sanders and Truesdell were dominant at the face-off as always.
With the victory, the Blue Demons finish the season with an impressive 9-1-1 regular season record. A big week looms, however, as Buckley prepares to play in a two-day tournament hosted by rival Allen-Stevenson next Tuesday (5/29) and Thursday (5/31) on Randall’s Island. Tournament details will be emailed to parents shortly and posted to the team website.
Congratulations again to the graduating student-athletes and a hearty thank you to the band of loyal and vocal parents who came out again in support. We hope to see everyone out next week, when the team looks to steal some hardware from their rivals in blue and goal.
