The boys in Buckley’s Upper School are leaders. They lead younger boys by example, they take on the challenge of increasingly complex and exacting academic work, they excel in the arts, they lead student activities, they represent the School in interscholastic athletics, and they serve their community. They embody what it means to be a “Buckley Boy” as they prepare to bring their fine talents and strong values with them to secondary school. The Upper School is dynamic and demanding, with a commitment to pursuing excellence and to helping boys find joy in learning.
To become such leaders, every boy does everything. At a stage of development in which boys begin to shape who they will become, our talented faculty shepherd them as they build their confidence to lean into discomfort and push past self-perceived boundaries. Buckley Boys act in class plays. They solve advanced math problems typically found in high school curricula. They learn Latin in addition to Spanish or French. They sing as members of the Glee Club. They hit the fields, courts, or mats in their “Buckley Blues” every day. They sketch classics of art history and begin to paint their own. They read seminal works of literature and learn to write clear, compelling prose and evocative poetry. They code and engineer complex structures and machines, both digital and physical. And they hold positions of Class Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Athletic Representative, and Librarian-Technologist, all while serving on publications, community service, and environmental committees. A Buckley Boy will discover he is much more than he could have imagined himself to be and capable of anything set before him.
Sincerely,
Bobby McMahon
Director of the Upper School
